PAA Member Appreciation Day & General Body Meeting ...

    Annual Report 2011

    December 4, 2011

    Muhammad Wasim

    President 2011

First of all, I want to sincerely thank Allah and then  PAA Members for giving me the opportunity to serve in this capacity, and participating in our events and activities. This was a truly gratifying experience. Secondly, I’d like to express my deep appreciation to the members of the Executive Committee who helped plan, organize, and implement our functions during the year. This was certainly an eventful year.On the administrative side:

    1)    We upgraded PAA Website, adding Raabta Magazine, Desi Ads, and the ability to pay membership dues online. 14857 visited our site.

    2)    We prepared a Resource List of all vendors and services we use so future Executive Committees may experience a smoother transition.

    3)    We reinstated our 501C(4) status with the IRS and established routine Tax Returns service.

    In the Community Service arena:

    1)    We participated in the 14th Annual Islamic Charity Festival, and distributed

    600 snacks and drinks

    2) Sponsored 10 Hygiene Backpacks for homeless people with project downtown.

    3)    We actively campaigned for a Book Drive, and accumulated and provided 3

large boxes full of books to UAF and AYA Schools.

    4)  37 PAA Volunteers fed over 70 poor/homeless people recently at Thanksgiving.

    5)     We provided orientation and guidance to a number of Pakistanis arriving in Tampa for the first time.

PAA Social Events are obviously the most visible part of our role, and thanks to the support of Members and Friends, we successfully presented a number of events.

Our Cricket Hungama held on Feb. 20th 2011 was a great success with teams from Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Polk Counties participating. The winner was Pinellas Team.

Our 20th Anniversary Celebration was organized in conjunction with Pakistan Resolution Day on March 26. We produced a short documentary of PAA history and presented at the program. We also published a special magazine-size program booklet for the event. Mr. Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, a representative from Embassy of Pakistan, was our chief guest at this event.

    Our 1st Comedy Mushaira held on May 14, 2011 was a “sold out” event.December 23, 2011

Our Annual Picnic held on July 10 at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor was very well-received by attendees.

Pakistan Day & Eid Celebration on September 3rd was attended by 350 people, and we ran out of food and proper seating arrangement! Our biggest challenge continues to be not knowing how many people will attend! I wish there was a way we could insist on advance reservations at least 3 to 5 days before the event!

We were over-prepared for our Eid-ul-Adha celebration on Nov 6, and ended up giving away a lot of leftover food!

Once again, I want to thank each and every Member of PAA for supporting and assuring its viability.

    Jazaak Allah

    Muhammad Wasim

THANKSGIVING- FEED THE POOR NOV. 4, 2011

    Wednesday, Nov 30, 2011

Our Feed the Poor project on Thanksgiving Day was another success this year.

37 volunteers, including children and young adults, all wearing PAA’s Green T-shirts displaying Unity Motto “TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE” gathered at Homeless Helping Homeless, and served over 70 people.

Fried Chicken, Pizza, Corn, Bananas, Cupcakes, Fruit Smoothies, and water, procured by PAA, and some donated by the volunteers, provided an ample meal for the less fortunate ones.

Thanks to those who helped in this effort with their time and resources. It certainly gave us the satisfaction of “giving back” to our community.

We hope PAA Members will continue this endeavor in the future to tangibly and visibly contribute to local communities.

    PAA’s Eid-ul-Adha Celebration Nov 6, 2011

    Tuesday, Nov 22, 2011

    PAA’s Eid-ul-Adha Celebration

Over 200 people attended our Eid-ul-Adha function held on Eid Day, Sunday, November 6 at the CHS hall in New Port Richey. With warm festive spirits and beautiful adornments, the attendees socialized to their heart’s content throughout the evening. A bit spicy but delicious buffet dinner, catered by Apna Kabab House of New Tampa, was thoroughly enjoyed by most people. The Magician/Comedian generated loud laughter and numerous applause in spite of an inadequate sound system.

Pakistan Independence Day and Eid Celebration Sept. 3rd ...

    Friday, Oct 21, 2011

Pakistan Independence Day and Eid Celebration Function held this past Saturday, the 3rd, at Wyndham Westshore Hotel was one of the most heavily attended PAA events ever. A number of local businesses had set up their display booths during the entire evening. Social Hour with appetizers provided ample opportunity for mingling and networking. This was followed by maghrib prayers. The formal program started with Tilawat-e-Quran by Dr. Masood Ansari and translation by Sabah Siddiqui. This was followed by the National Anthems of USA and Pakistan. President Muhammad Wasim then addressed the audience expressing gratitude to the Almighty for the Blessings of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, and love and friendship of family and friends. He thanked the Executive Committee for their hard work, and PAA Members and friends for their ongoing support of PAA events. He also urged everyone to support positive elements of Pakistan’s civil society in eliminating corruption and turmoil. His speech was followed by a well-researched multi-media presentation prepared by Hamad Sagheer on Eid Celebrations in Different Countries around the globe. Eric Shepard of Piano Distributors had brought in a new state-of-the-art Yamaha Baby Grand Piano, which was first played by the two children of Sabah and Tariq Siddiqui, then by the two children of Teresa and Fazal Hadi, and finally by Eric Shepard himself. This was very well received by the audience. Sirvach Ansari then presented a beautiful slide show titled “Precious Pakistan”. Both Hamad and Sirvach were presented with Recognition Certificates by President Wasim. Dr. Ghazala Roopani was also recognized for becoming the first Life Member of 2011. An elaborate buffet dinner was then served in an organized fashion, calling 3 tables at a time. President-elect Amjad Tareen then auctioned off IQRA’s digital version of Quran with Urdu Translation and Tafseer. This was donated by Saba and Suhail Ansari, PAA Treasurer. PAA Secretary Tariq Siddiqui spoke about our Feed the Poor project scheduled at Thanksgiving time, and solicited T-shirt sale. All proceeds of these specially ordered T-shirts will be used for this project. Tariq then introduced Asher Arfeen, our entertainer for the evening, who sang many well known songs rendered by Pakistani artists. Some attendees even danced to his songs. The program ended with a Vote of Thanks by Amjad Tareen.

    Annual Picnic July 10th 2011

    Friday, Jul 22, 2011

    Dear PAA Members and Friends:

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of Member-Families and Friends, our Annual Picnic held at Phillippe Park on Sunday, July 10th was an overwhelming success. The beautiful setting of the park in Safety Harbor with a backdrop of Tampa Bay was further enhanced by a brief sprinkle of rain.

Many people stopped by for an hour or two while others stayed till the end. A variety of food and snacks brought in by the attendees culminated into a bountiful buffet enjoyed by all. Roasted corn-on-the-cob was a real hit, and so was the pathani chai! There was so much food, we had to ask people to take some home.

We want to take this opportunity to express our most sincere appreciation to all those Member-Families and Friends who always participate and support PAA events. As much as we try, the Executice Committee could not do much without your support.

Please mark your calendars, if you have not already done so, for our Eid-ul-Fitr Party combined with Pakistan Independence Day celebration on Saturday, September 3rd. And, please let us know of your participation ahead of time, so we may prepare accordingly.

    Have a safe summer.

    Khuda Hafiz.

    Muhammad Wasim

    President

    Mazahiya Mushaira May 14, 2011

    Tuesday, May 24, 2011

    Dear PAA Members & Friends:

We are proud to announce the first PAA Mazahiya Mushaera, probably the largest ever in Tampa Bay, held on Saturday, May 14 was a gleaming success. The modest venue was filled to capacity  with people from all over Central Florida, and most of them stayed till the very end to enjoy every bit of fun, sarcasm, and laughter woven into the poetry of the following local and out-of-town Urdu poets:

    1. Syed Khalid Irfan, New York

    2. Noor Amrohvi, Dallas
    3. Zulfiqar Agha, Orlando

    4. Dr. Arif Zaheer, Orlando

    5. Ahmed Tanha, Orlando

    6. Sarfaraz Habibi, Orlando

    7. Eijaz Shaikh, Melbourne

    8. Khurram Zai, Tampa/Virginia

    9. Akhtar Qadir, Tampa

    10. Dr   Husain Zia , Tampa

    11. Shahid Khan, Tampa

    12. Fazal Siddiqui, Tampa

People started gathering at Taj Mahal Banquet Hall around 7:00 pm. After ample networking, a generous buffet dinner, supplied by Syed Iqbal with more dishes than we had ordered, was started around 7:45 pm, and continued after a break for Maghrib Prayer. Attendees complimented on the quantity, taste and quality of food.

Mushaera, chaired by our Chief Guest Dr. Naseer Shaikh, started just past 9:00 pm, and continued non-stop until almost midnight. Dr Farrukh Zaidi emceed the mushaera and created the true ambience and elegance of Bazm-e-Adab with his Urdu vocabulary and articulation. There were numerous requests to organize such programs more than once a year. All in all, we had another great event, thanks to the support and participation of PAA members.

    Islamic Charity Festival Report

PAA enthusiastically participated in the 14th Annual Islamic Charity Festival this past Sunday, the 17th of April at the Riverfront Park behind Tampa Performing Arts Center.

Over 30 organizations participated to provide food, clothes, shoes, medical supplies and bicycles to homeless and underprivilege people who anxiously wait for this event each year. Beautiful sunny day with pleasant temperatures prompted over 2000 people to attend.

PAA had set up a food table under our traditional green tent with a large banner. Executive Committee Members, spouses, and their children donned
"Together we can make a difference" T-shirts especially ordered for the occasion. These green T-shirts with PAA's logo in the front and sponsors' names in the back looked really sharp! (Thank you, sponsors, for your generosity.
Many participating Indo-Pakistanis as well as a few colleagues from work paid the $10 donation for the T-shirts and wore them as well. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti, City Councilmen, County Commissioners, Board Members of Tampa Bay Muslim Alliance, and representatives
of all the other participating organizations stopped by our tent. Wow, what a display of organizational strength!

We distributed 600 snacks and some biryani brought in by several PAA members.
This was a great opportunity to give something back to the local communities,
and build bridges with local citizens and politicians.

If you missed this event, please be sure to participate in our "Book Drive" next
month and "Feed the Hungry" Program during the Holiday Season.

    Muhammad Wasim
    President

Pakistan Resolution Day & PAA 20th Anniversary- Ma ...

    Monday, Apr 4, 2011

The Saturday, 26th of March, 2011, PAA held its Grand Event at Embassy Suites – USF to celebrate its 20th Anniversary in conjunction with Pakistan Resolution Day. Members and guests were welcomed at the Registration Desk by Suhail Ansari, Humaira Holley and Sundas Bukhari. They started gathering around 6:30 pm in a reserved area of the hotel lobby beautifully surrounded by fountains and lush landscape. Delicious Pakistani hors’doeuvres were served.

Eight (8) booths featuring a variety of products from Designer Boutique Clothes to Jewelry and Perfumes greeted the attendees in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom. Ladies had a great time shopping. HDF, American Youth Academy and SoundVision also had their representative booths.

The formal program, emceed by Ameer Lakhani and Roohi Abidi, started after Maghrib Namaz with the recitation of Tilawat-e-Quran and its translation by our very own Dr Masood Ansari (JazakAllah Khairan). This was followed by National Anthems of USA and Pakistan. Immediately thereafter, an out-of-town guest Mr. Khurram Yusuf Zai recited a sentimental poetry dedicated to Pakistan. This was followed by a short video presentation and commentary on the historic Lahore Resolution, otherwise known as Pakistan Resolution.

The next item on the agenda was a 15-minute nostalgic presentation of interviews with many of the Founders and Past Presidents of PAA who discussed some of their experiences during PAA’s inception and subsequent years. This was received extremely well by the enthusiastic crowd.

A 5-minute preview of a Comedy Mushaira was presented next to encourage members and guests to make their reservations for our upcoming event on Saturday, May 14, 2011. (Be sure to mark your calendars and book your tickets now while you are thinking about it).

Children were entertained by a magician and enjoyed pizza while adults were attending the formal program.

President Muhammad Wasim then spoke to the audience thanking everyone for their support of various PAA projects. He mentioned the upcoming “Book Drive” for ”The Read America” Program, and participating in the “Feed the Hungry” project of Metropolitan Ministries during Thanksgiving and Christmas as our token of reciprocating with the local communities for all the privileges we enjoy in this society.

This was followed by a speech by our Chief Guest Mr. Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, Political Counseller to Pakistan’s Ambassador to USA. He remarked on Pakistan’s progress in mere 64 years of its existence, in spite of all the adversities and challenges it has faced. He solicited support from Pakistani expatriates to generate goodwill and friendship of American people for Pakistan.

President-elect Amjad Tareen then took the stage to announce the winner of our recent cricket hungama event. Mr. Tipu handed the trophy to the captain of the winning team from Pinellas County.

A birthday cake decorated with PAA logo and picture of Quaid-e-Azam was then brought out, and all the Past Presidents were asked to come forward for the cake cutting ceremony. Everyone sang along with the band first playing Happy Birthday to you, and then Sohni dharti Allah rakhey. What a touching moment! We saw a few tears of joy here.

Sammar Chaudhry then led the people to the Grand Buffet Dinner featuring Pakistani dishes (Tandoor Chicken, Palakh-Gosht, Korma, Biryani, Jilebi and Ras Malai) was enjoyed by all.

Following dinner, Tariq Siddiqui came on stage to introduce Sangeet Band. He also thanked all the attendees of this program, re-solicited member support for our Book Drive, and expressed need for volunteers to help with Feed the Hungry project during the Holidays. Expect an email from him in the near future with additional details.

Grand Finale’ was the 2-hour Pakistani Music entertainment provided by Sangeet Band that brought quite a few people on the dance floor. Members enjoyed the band so much nobody wanted to leave. The program ended at midnight when the hotel asked us to stop!

Everyone was full of compliments. Those who couldn’t come surely missed a great program. We hope members will make a special effort to attend future PAA events.
